If you searched for a Viking IPTV review, you probably found pages that award five stars to whichever service they happen to sell. We are not going to add another one. We sell a subscription ourselves, so a glowing review of it written by us would be worth nothing to you.

What we can offer is the method: twelve checks that let you review this service, or any other, with your own eyes. Most take a minute. A seller that fails several of them has told you what you need to know.

Before you look at the price

1. Which website are you actually on?

Many unrelated sites trade under near-identical names. Read the address bar. Prices, trials and promises on one domain do not carry over to another, and support on one site cannot help with an order placed on a different one.

2. Does the site say who it is?

Look for an About page, a contact method that a person answers, and terms you can read. Anonymous sites with only a payment button give you no one to go back to.

3. Are the claims specific or just large?

Headline numbers are easy to print and impossible for you to count. A careful seller will confirm whether the particular channels you watch are available. Ask the question and see how it is answered.

Pricing and terms

4. Is the full price visible before you commit?

You should be able to see what each plan length costs for the number of screens you need. Our own figures are on the pricing page.

5. One-off or recurring?

Find out whether the plan renews automatically. Neither model is wrong, but you should know which you are buying.

6. What exactly is a “connection”?

It means one stream playing at one time. If your household watches on two TVs in the evening, you need two. Check the wording carefully — “multi-device” can mean only that you may install on several devices.

7. What are the refund terms?

Read the policy first. Vague wording such as “satisfaction guaranteed” with no conditions is a warning sign, not a comfort.

The service itself

8. Start short

Buy the shortest plan first, whatever the discount on a long one. A month on your own devices and your own broadband tells you more than any review.

9. Test at your real viewing time

Evening is when home networks and the wider internet are busiest. Judge the service then, and on a wired connection if you can, so that you are testing the stream rather than your Wi-Fi. If you see stutters, rule out your own network with our buffering guide.

10. Is there a programme guide?

A working guide makes live TV usable. Check that it loads and that the times are right for your country.

11. How does support respond?

Send a real question before you buy. The speed and quality of the answer is the best preview of what happens when something breaks.

The uncomfortable question

12. Is the content licensed?

IPTV is a legitimate technology used by major broadcasters. Whether a particular service has the rights to what it carries is a separate question, and the law in the UK, Sweden and the USA puts the main liability on those who distribute without permission. Ask the provider directly, and read our overview of IPTV legality by country.

Warning signs worth walking away from

  • Payment only by methods that cannot be traced or disputed
  • Pressure to buy the longest plan immediately
  • Reviews with no source that you cannot verify anywhere
  • An app you are told to install from a link in a chat message
  • A request for remote access to your device

How to read other people's reviews

Give more weight to reviews that mention a specific device, a specific problem and how it was resolved. Discount anything that reads like an advert, and check whether the review is about the same domain you are considering.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't you publish customer ratings?

We only show reviews we can trace to a real customer, and we do not add star-rating markup to our pages. An empty space is more honest than an invented score.

Is a free trial better than a one-month plan?

Either lets you test on your own equipment. What matters is that you test before committing to a long period.

What is the single most useful check?

Number 11. Message support with a precise question about your device and see what comes back.
